Hiking a Palace

For our day off excursion, this morning we went on a hike to a palace that is built in the top of a mountain.  Literally, inside of the mountain.  This structure is only a short drive for us but after 2 years we are just getting out to enjoy it.

This palace was one of the palaces of King Herod and the place of his burial.  He built the palace inside the top of the mountain that gives way to sweeping views of the area.  It is the highest point in the wilderness and the entire region is viewable from the top, the perfect location for a paranoid, evil king!

The path up wasn't complicated but it wasn't smooth either!

Here is one of the watch towers for the fortress and palace.  On the top of this would have been a bedroom that offered great views as well as a nice breeze during the hot months.

The boys love to explore and be outside.  Sam was intrigued with the entire thing and asked lots of great questions!

Andrew's legs hurt ;)  but he had fun anyway!

The wildflowers are in bloom and add some beautiful color to the area.

There are four underground tunnels that were used for a variety of things.  One of the main things Herod did was build large cisterns to gather the rain water and then they would use the tunnels to gather the water.  The tunnels allowed the access to the water even if they were under siege.

This is what is remaining of the tomb of King Herod and his family. 

This is a replica of the mausoleum that would have been built on top of his tomb.  They have a recreated one at the base of the mountain.

Plenty of lizards to look at!

These rocks have been recovered around the mountain and were used as weapons.
